Department of Health’s (DOH) proposed plan to distribute condoms in school makes the Department of Education (DepEd) hesitant in approving it, as what the Secretary Leonor Briones said.
Sec. Briones top level talks with the Department of Health has been ongoing since the DOH made the highly controversial proposal.
“Ang gusto talaga nila ay ma-increase yung awareness sa AIDS, kasi tumataas ang level ng teenage prenancy at HIV/AIDS. Our next generation is really at risk,” Briones said. This is a very sensitive issue, a thorough explanation or a counseling is needed before the distribution.
The DepEd also mentioned that the distribution should not be an instrument for immorality and deprivation of moral values.
In case this proposal is approved, Secretary Briones said it will be done only in Junior and Senior high schools. It is also said that teachers must be trained on how to explain to the students the distribution of condoms and the many effect of pre-marital sex.
